School-Based Virtual Learning (Grades PK-12)
In the school-based virtual model, instruction is delivered to students in PK-12 who are not at the school site. Students are taught by a Newton County School System (NCSS) teacher who will follow the district’s curriculum maps and use virtual learning software to support the teaching and learning process. This option requires heavy use of instructional technology, including digital tools that already are available in our classrooms (cameras, digital meeting platforms, and learning management systems). This online model leverages the strengths of teachers and staff in supporting the learning success of students.
The expectations and daily schedule will mirror that of in-person instruction, and virtual students will have a full instructional day, Monday-Friday, that includes all core academic courses (English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) along with specials/connections. Attendance will be taken and assignments will be graded by the assigned NCSS teacher. Grading practices will adhere to the current Newton County Grading Policy as stated in the student handbook (located in the student agenda). Students will receive progress reports and report cards on the dates indicated on the district’s school calendar.
Instructional Day
Elementary School 7:40-2:20
Middle School 9:00-4:15
High School 8:15-3:15
There is a significant commitment needed by parents/guardians to help facilitate learning virtually. As a result, parents who select the school-based virtual option will be required to commit to this option for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. If requested, students will receive a Chromebook and/or mobile hot spot. Furthermore, instructional support resources such as textbooks and manipulatives will be provided to all students. Plans for distribution of materials will be communicated prior to the start of the school year. A NCSS teacher will deliver instruction in option two. The Newton County School System remains responsible for the education of all students eligible for special education services with an individualized education plan (IEP). As a result, each students’ IEP team will work to ensure that the student receives a free and appropriate education.
