Director's Note

Felicia Hodges
Dear Parents,

At Liberty Middle School, we offer a course in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) which prepares students for family and work life through a variety of activities that promote self-awareness and explain how to balance roles and responsibilities of being in a family, home, career, and community.  The intention of this course is to introduce your student to specific career pathways: Nutrition and Food Science, Leadership, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Teaching as a Profession, Consumer Services and Employability Skill Training.  To do this, students participate in lessons about nutrition, basic food preparation, child development, career choices, job seeking and keeping skills, economics and management, communication, work-life balance, and decision making.

Leadership development is an important part of the Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum because young people need leadership skills to succeed in life.  Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that has been helping young men and women become leaders since 1945.  The LMS chapter of FCCLA plans and carries out projects that build leaders for healthy families, successful careers, and strong communities.  All students in FACS classes will participate in FCCLA chapter projects through class and many of these activities will encourage students to think beyond the classroom through assignments and/or service projects in the community- an important part of your student’s total learning experience. However, only students who actually join FCCLA are eligible to participate in competitions, go on FCCLA sponsored trips, and be publicly recognized through the FCCLA organization for their accomplishments.  These experiences expand students’ school-based learning experiences, and I am delighted to be able to give these opportunities to your child.

If your student wants to join, please request a membership application via email at [email protected] and return it with payment.  The total cost for School, Local, State, and National dues is $35.  Though it is not necessary for students enrolled in FACS to join, paying dues opens a wide variety of opportunities and offers the pride of belonging to an important national organization.  I believe FCCLA can be of benefit for every student.  Please support your student’s efforts in this area.   If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact me. I hope we will have future opportunities to speak and work together to support your student’s school, family, career, and community success.

Warm Regards,
